Hitchen Road Vineyard Pokeno new zealand
Hitchen
Road Vineyard is a 5 acre vineyard on very favourable north
facing slopes above the Pokeno Village, just south of the
Bombay Hills. It is part of a 100 acre pastoral farm and has
a beautiful view over the North Waikato.
All the wines are hand crafted here from grapes that are grown
on the property. The only process that takes place off site
is bottling.
We are 40 minutes south of the Auckland CBD and 50 minutes
north of Hamilton. Visiting the winery is by appointment -
call us on 09 233 6722 or 0274 948 737.
What's Happening at Hitchen
Road Vineyard?
Like everyon,e we were glad to see some rain over the weekend
- some of the grapes were looking as if they needed a bit
of a drink and our paddocks certainly did.
The quality of the crop however is absolutely superb. We have made a huge
effort to repel birds adding a sound system which emits frighted bird sounds
to our usual methods and something seems to have worked. There is for the
first time hardly any bird damage at all and not a sign of any disease.
The Chardonnay and Pinot Gris were picked on 14/3. This
will be the first time we have made Pinot Gris in commercial
quantities and we are looking forward to that. On
15/3, we picked the Pinotage. All the fruit was very
ripe (at around 24Brix), the musts are bubbling away and
we are expecting great wines.
As far as availability of wine is concerne,d we have completely
run out of Chardonnay and our 2010 Pinotage has been replaced
by 2012 Pinotage and we are now selling 2011 Rose.
We are excited that we have our first Montepulciano back from the bottlers. We
are loving it but are not releasing it for sale for another couple of months. |
