Hitchen Road Vineyard Pokeno new zealand
Hitchen
Road Vineyard is a 5 acre vineyard on very favourable north
facing slopes above the Pokeno Village, just south of the
Bombay Hills. It is part of a 100 acre pastoral farm and has
a beautiful view over the North Waikato.
All the wines are hand crafted here from grapes that are grown
on the property. The only process that takes place off site
is bottling.
We are 40 minutes south of the Auckland CBD and 50 minutes
north of Hamilton. Visiting the winery is by appointment -
call us on 09 233 6722 or 0274 948 737.
What's Happening at Hitchen
Road Vineyard?
The Harvest is over. With all the sun we've had, we are
delighted by the quality of the grapes.
Exciting for
us was the fact that we were able to harvest a small commercial
amount of Montipulciano - we were only able to make
1 barrel and if it's as good as the small experimental
amount we made last year, we're sure it will disappear very
quickly once it gets into the bottle - you will need to be
quick!
The 2008 Malbec and Pinotage are now sold out.
We have back from the bottlers 2009 Barrel Fermented
Chardonnay with it's typical stone fruit aromas,
buttery flavour, crystal clarity and clean finish on the
palate. For those that prefer the crispness of an Unwooded
Chardonnay this is still available as are our Dolcetto and Rose.
In the vineyard, Ken has started the big task of pruning - meanwhile in the Winery,
the new wines are sleeping in their barrels as they age and undergo gentle Malo-Lactic
Fermentation.
